    Could bad grammar hurt your writing?

    Now listen before you guys chew me up, lol, i dont mean bad grammar as in a few misplaced commas and forgetting to put a period or not knowing the difference in there their and they're even though you should know how to use all of that properly. I mean more in a slang type of way, or using something you would text in your writing like lol lmao. With this day and age of social networks taking over people do not really seem to make big deals on slang and changing words around and stuff so i want to know do you think proper grammar and bad grammar make a difference yes or no and why?

    Well abbreviations and slang are not to be used in articles. I never used them even when an article is informal. These abbreviations are to be used in comments and short posts, but not in an article as they make it look unprofessional. Regarding grammar mistakes, it goes without saying that proper use will lead to a well written article. Poor grammar will make an article look as if it was translated or written by a non native writer, which ends up discouraging a reader from reading it or sharing it. It can basically defy the whole reason behind an article.

    Yes I agree with EliteWriter here completely.

    I have seen some awful content on websites and it looks to me like that horrible text slang where everything it written so badly I can't understand anything.

    Maybe I've become old and a prude but I make sure I always write everything properly, even when I sms. Yes I do add the odd LOL into an sms or maybe in comments like you mention.

    Yes that is a must for me too. Even a short message grammar and proper spelling really matters to me and I automatically write words properly without thinking about taking a short way out even when there is a limit on the amount of characters I can input. Guess I am as old as you Could bad grammar hurt your writing? I use slang and abbreviations such as lol and rofl, but only in short comments with people who I am confident with, not in articles, or with my clients.

    oh of course not there is a format already to writing any thing you feel like publishing you know just as well as i know you can not just talk how you want any which way when it comes too articles and things of the same sort, you have to speak to your readers properly so you make perfect sense , i like how you went in to detail on what would be an ok situation too i can see you put thought into this and that is what im looking for , you said it is better to use the extra stuff more in comments and short post and i couldn't agree more

    I don't think using slang and colloquial terms will do harm to your article. however, you should avoid over doing. Whether it is appropriate to use slang like LOL, LMAO etc. actually depends on the article you are writing and your target audience.

    Well if we talking about working as writer, then i guess grammar is very important part of it. That's almost main thing writer should have to offer it's services on the market. My English is not bad, but still i would not offer my articles writing services due to quality of it because i think that professional writer should be really fluent. Writing comments or some other things may be even OK with some slang. Or writing some posts on social media networks, can be even fun to use some slang in it, which sometime gets even better results for some funny reason, but when it's about articles writing i would go for fluent and grammatically correct writer.

    yea and you know just as i talked about with elite writer i agree with you guys on it a hundred percent, you can write no article with just any grammar and i do not think it would be too smart to throw slang in there either, i mean maybe in some cases depending the situation it could pass you know but any regular piece of writing it wont pass we all know that there are certain standards we must follow for everything we write i guess it is based on a time and pace kind of thing you know

    Not matter your industry, if you want to be taken serious and as a professional, you need to have good grammar. It's just essential.
    If you are talking with your friends or don't care about the way other perceive you, sure, it doesn't matter.

    yea of course i agree it is all about being professional i can not knock you for that but even in business you must a certain human aspect to, being the one with perfect writing all the time is like saying you never had a boss of yours curse in front of you , it has happened to me before plenty of times and theres nothing professional about swearing , i guess it all depends on your line of work on what is the deciding factor on how loose or strict you should be with all of your writing , thanks for commenting

    Hi jkeyz2 thanks for your nice question. Yes I think for writing English grammar is very importance elements. And if you thinking as professional content writer, I am sure well grammatical understanding you have to have. But, as communication English, you do not need to check grammatical error always. I think people may understand anything without parts of speech terms. And for speaking English also grammar does not importance. Beside, for writing content or something in your mind, you must to thinking parts of speech terms with appropriate tense. So, I think bad grammar should hurt for professional writer.

    and i think you hit the nail on the head with the hammer on this aj lancer , i am really glad you were able to put it in that perspective, you know you say if you are a content writer then you have to take it upon yourself to make sure that what you are writing has the proper grammar and i like how you took too the other side of the topic by calling it communication English that right there in it self helps make it easier to understand this is a great comment aj thank you for taking the time to share

    Well everyone makes mistakes so I don't think the odd typo or grammer error will make your website disappear from search engines. The odd mistake won't matter.

    However when there are lots of mistakes on a consistent basis I think this will have a big impact and not only with rankings but also with your readers.

    Spelling and grammar errors jump off the page at me. If there are loads it really distracts me from the actual content I am reading and I find it annoying. My advice is to take the time to make sure there are not loads of mistakes and if you are incapable have someone check your content before publishing it.

    you know Lynne i like the point of view you took on it, it is not exactly what i was asking but i can agree i feel as if when some thing has too many errors and the writing is just off i ca not really focus on reading it , every one makes mistakes and typos are just bound too happen so with that being said i think you are right and you are heading in the right direction with this, it has to be up to the writer to make sure that if any mistakes do happen they are rare in inconsistence i really do think that can hurt some ones writing

    Well, I'm not native in English. I'm from Sweden and I am fully aware of my writing skills. I make mistakes, not as much when I talk as I do when I write. It's harder to spell everything correct and it's hard to know at what point you need to use that comma, exclamation or dash etc.

    With that being said, I do think that I'm doing good. Half good at least. Could bad grammar hurt your writing?

    I mean, I've been working online for about 5 years, I've been talking/writing in English everyday since the first day of my freelancing career.. But, I am from Sweden, I talk Swedish with my friends, my mom, my girlfriend and my relatives.. Some things just won't get picked up by my brain unfortunately, no matter how much I try..

    However, I would never try to write in slang. Sure, lol, lmfao, rofl etc. That is fine. I can live with that. But I would never use something like that in my business. Ever. It screams unprofessional in my book.

    I agree with the above; slang and abbreviations shouldn’t be used in writing. I means common abbreviations like UK for United Kingdom is fine but something like “lol” shouldn’t be used. It looks unprofessional and people may not understand all the slang if they don’t use it. Some of the times, when my friend uses some slang, I need to look it up because I don’t know it. For example, someone said “wyd?” to me and I was like huh? I had to look it up and apparently, it is “what you doing?” but surely it can be many other options. All writing should be professional and in proper English and this could affect your SEO. People won’t like it if you have too much slang and this could affect their user experience which harms your SERP.

    Friends used to tell me that my texting was impeccable because I rarely use abbreviations. I understand that the text words were invented for a faster way of sending a message but I'm afraid that I might get used to those slangy terms. You see, one of my duties in the office is to write reports and written communications. That's why I am on the lookout for grammar and spelling mistakes because it can greatly affect my job. Isn't it a pity when the younger generation would enter the real world and would find that they need to be strict with their grammar and spelling? That would be a disaster for them.

    From what I have read from the MOZ it does not affect the SEO. And it does not affect the ranking. So the issue here is only the human readers. They may not stay for long. And that does affect your grammar and writing. People need to use the editor if they are into the content writing. That surely helps for having better content on the site. I personally find that grammar is good for having human readers and interaction and comments.

    The truth of the matter is that if we don't make use of good grammar while passing out our messages using our articles, then the main work why you rote the article has been defeated. Using correct grammar would make anyone interested in reading your article to get the point you're trying to make with your works.

    A message that's not properly written is a turn off.and the targeted might not be edified because they didn't understand it.it always pertinent to write anything devoid of abbreviations and slangs.most times the reader is lost in really understanding the content or information shared.

    This depends on who your audience is. If your audience is a layman, he will prefer the article this is written in conversational language. He would not mind slang and contractions of words. However, if your article is meant for people who want to find trustworthy articles, you have to avoid conversational language.

    It depends on the environment where your writing or content is presented. In some instances, there is a relaxed atmosphere. There's no need to be so formal. In other places where it is sort of “academic”, i.e. less casual, you're expected to know what you're talking about and to express yourself intelligently, as if you're an authority or expert. There would probably be no reason to use LOL or LMAO.
