Have you ever started your own social networking community site?

Hi all. Have you ever started your own social networking site and community? Whether something generic or a niche related social networking site/community?

Have you ever wanted to be the CEO of your own social media site like Facebook or Instagram, Twitter etc? Or have you ever started any broad or niche social network?

There are many social networking scripts out there you can use to start your own social networking site. Things like Oxwall, BuddyPress, JCow, phpFox, phpFusion, Dolphin, Elgg etc etc. Have you ever used any of these to start and run your own social network?

If so how is it going or is it still up and running?

Have you had any success with it?

Or is this sort of thing on your "things to try and do" list? Have you ever started your own social networking community site?

Now that you mention all of this. I do have an idea about a social network I think it can change everything! But I'm not yet ready to share it with the world.
Maybe if the right buyer comes along I'll pitch my idea, I'm fine with 10% percent of the company! Just need to find the right person to invest in all of this.

As far as starting communities, well I did do that at one point a lot of years ago when IRC was still active. I've created a channel that has around 200+ active members every minute of the day, having peak points of 1000 members active at once.
Glorious times, too bad I was too young and too naive to turn a profit around from all that traffic.

I have used those free scripts, and found that since they are free and opensource, there is already a lot of those social networks around. I would rather create my own social network with my own code than to use a free and opensouce script.

Opensource
It is free and opensource meaning anyone could download the script. Since anyone can download you can imagine that there is tons of the opensource networks around. Generally they are all geared towards a website that doesn't necessarily have social capabilities.

.
Custom Code
Since it is a custom code, there is only one script. The social network is unique, and you can add any feature or function, change designs, and people would be willing to signup for a social network that is new and innovative.

Oh no, I've never considered doing that before, it never occurred to me and I am not sure I would be able to manage something like that to be honest. But it sounds like something way cool to try. Surely though if you use the same scripts as someone else your social network would be very similar looking. With a different name, sure but still similar?

Surely it would be quite hard to get a social network pumping? I assume you would also need your own team of programmers to make things customized and to add new features?

I have never done this myself before, but it sounds like it would help
out a bunch I'm not sure how safe it would be though I guess you could say that is the only thing that concerns me to be honest

I have always wanted to create my own social media site, however, I don't have knowledge and skills to do that. I once heard about a program that offered facebook like social media script. The free version would give you a subdomain and had limited functionality. The premium version would cost $7 per month (the basic subscription), you could use your own domain with the premium version. sadly, I don't remember the name of this program.

The only network that I can speak of is my membership in some Facebook Groups. Once I was invited to be an admin but I declined for I think it will eat my precious time and it’s not a money-making job. Creating your own social networking community is a hard task because you need to have the passion for it. And it depends on your purpose because if it is just a hobby then that’s a good one for you because, at least, you will enjoy the work.
