    Alternative Spam Plugin to WPspamShield?

    Can anyone recommend a good spam plugin that I can use for my website? I was using WPspamshield but I had some conflicting plugins and it wasn't working well for me all of a sudden.

    I am now getting so much spam and it is a problem for me to keep going through it.

    What spam plugin do you use and what would you recommend?

    Here are some alternatives to protect your Wordpres blog/website to spam:
    1. Anti-Spam: Anti-spam plugin blocks spam in comments automatically, invisibly for users and for admins.

    2. Antispam Bee: Antispam Bee blocks spam comments and trackbacks effectively and without captchas. It is free of charge, ad-free and compliant with European data privacy standards.

    3. Akismet (used by wordpress.com): Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet Web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog's "Comments" admin screen.

    4. Disqus: is a service and tool for web comments and discussions. Disqus makes commenting easier and more interactive, while connecting websites and commenters across a thriving discussion community.

    Oh wow, thanks for that great list Codebots, I really appreciate it! I was using Akismet until I think end of last year and then I changed to WPspamshield and I can't remember exactly why.

    I know it had something to do with the fact that it was completely free and then I think they made some changes where the free version was not so good or they wanted everyone to pay... or maybe the free version was not so good as it was before because they were trying to get people to pay. Anyway someone I respect i the industry recommended I change my spam plugin in WPspamshield so I did for all my websites.

    Anyway so I think I will give Akismet a skip... I have seen Disqus before, but don't people have to sign up to Disqus before they can comment? I'm not so keen on this simply because I will leave a website and not bother commenting if I have to sign up to something or sometimes even log on.

    So that leaves Anti-Spam and Antispam Bee as my top choices... which one of the two would you recommend?

    In my opinion, Antispam Bee is the best option because it have a lot of options and configurations to detect spam. In the other hand, Anti-Spam only blocks automatic spam messages (sent by spam-bots via post requests), not detect spam sent via browser.

    Here are some features that makes AntiSpam Bee the best option:

    1. Free and Opensource.

    2. Low memory and CPU consumption.

    3. Allow Comments Only in a Certain Language.

    4. Block comments and pings from specific countrie.

    5. No Manual Modifications to Theme or Template Required.

    6. Trust approved commenters.

    7. Trust commenters with a Gravatar.

    8. Consider the comment time.

    9. Treat BBCode as spam.

    10. Validate the IP address of commenters.

    11. Use regular expressions.

    12. Search local spam database for commenters previously marked as spammers.

    13. Match against a public anti-spam database.

    14. Notify admins by e-mail about incoming spam.

    15. Delete existing spam after n days.

    16. Limit approval to comments/pings (will delete other comment types).

    17. Select spam indicators to send comments to deletion directly.

    18. Optionally exclude trackbacks and pingbacks from spam detection.

    19. Optionally spam-check comment forms on archive pages.

    20. Display spam statistics on the dashboard, including daily updates of spam detection rate and a total of blocked spam comments.

    Excellent and thank you so much CodeBots. When I saw those two I had a feeling that AntiSpam Bee was the one I wanted to go with and you have confirmed that for me.

    I will give them a go and once again thank you. It is great that I can come here and post questions when I am stuck and get such great advice and suggestions!

    I'm using the default Akismet for all the Wordpress blogs and websites I manage. I really didn't have any problems with spam since none of my clients are "influencers" in the niche. So yeah, I recommend plain old Akismet for spam.

    Don't know how things are for high traffic influencer very niche type blogs like yours, Lynne. I'm guessing every spammer out there wants to get a backlinks from your blog, maybe you even landed on some of their famous "lists" and that's why your getting some attacked.

    I have Akismet plugin through the jetpack. So it works out for me. It has some of the easy ways to manage the plugin. You can also make use of the sucuri. They seem to have the anti spam option where the IPs are banned. So that and another option is to make use of the plugins such as wordfence. But depending on which is easier to you. I'd recommend going with jetpack.
