How do you start a new popular social network?

I've been going over this for a while and was wondering how you would go about setting up a social network and getting it to be popular.

What would you do in order to set up a social network?

Are there any plugins or scripts that someone can use in the beginning in order to get a quick set up and later on get something custom coded?

I would think that getting the website up and running would be much easier than getting it to become popular. You would need to have a new idea in order to pull in the masses, and even if you have just an idea it has to be a good one that everyone will want to follow. Facebook did it right by limiting the sign ups to only college students and expanding rapidly enough to get people signed up because their friends were signed up.

Would you be able to access something like this or would you go the PPC, SEO, and Online Marketing route in order to pull in the masses?

The only problem with going the PPC route is that it may cost millions to get the ball rolling and even then there's not guarantee that you'll be successful. I guess you could go the investors route and bring in people who have money so that you aren't risking a lot of your own funds to push the website.

If you go this route, would you be willing to give away up to 49% of your company?

Large investors are only investing because they feel your idea can make money. If they give you funding, they want to make their money back down the road. Giving up a percentage of your company will ensure that they get their money back later on whether it be through advertising on your social network or them selling off their shares to the public.


So, what do you guys and girls think?

Is it possible to start up a brand new popular social network in a short amount of time and pushing it yourself or would you have to bring investors into the mix?

Anything is possible Razzy so yes I believe it can be done. The thing is that you would want it to be a really popular social network in order to really get a return right?

That would be the hard bit I think since there are already so many really popular social networks around. I believe you would need to bring out something completely new with a wicked and enticing twist to get people interested. Take me for example, I have already signed up with all the main social networks and I am not interested in joining any of the smaller fish.

Even if a smaller one becomes really popular I will need someone else to convince me to join and make me believe it will be worth my time. I have only just joined Instagram this last week because everyone is saying how huge it is becoming and how popular.

There is nothing such as "impossible." We can, of course, start a social network and make it popular, however, the main questions are, do you have intent, skills, time, money and such more.
You may not be able to replace facebook, nothing can replace facebook, however, you can, of course, make your own market.
First of all you need a unique concept. Your concept must be something that has not been around.
Secondly, you need unique design, in order to give a unique design you need to develop a new scripts.

I don't think that it is not possible, although I am always careful when doing anything on Facebook and my security is of utmost concern to me. So, if there is a way I can be secured on the social media, then it is coo, to start such. I have seen my friends who became popular on Facebook have their accounts hacked the next day and that is bad for me

Everything is possible in the internet and as long as you have the support of the investors, you can create a new social network. However, take note that creating may be easier than maintaining and the hardest part is the growing pains. How can you get the people to join your social network? Even your family and close friends might not join that easily. Of course, they will create an account but will they be active there? Will they be posting the way they are posting in Facebook or Twitter?
