Programming is it hard to learn? whats the difference between this and web developing.

Today i woke up wondering what the difference between programming and web developing was. I thought that they where the same thing are they not? the one thing i do know is that in both of these professions you have to write a Billion lines of code. If that is the case are they really different? I hope that someone here can explain this to me a little better and hopefully point me in the rite direction. I would like to learn the basics of both fields as i know it will help me in the future landing jobs or closing deals that involve code. I don't know if this is relevant or not but i am also hearing about computer scientist? I appreciate any and all feedback you guys can give on this topic! As always thank you for reading!

Well from my understanding web development could mean different things. For instance, if you develop websites but don't code with a programming language such as PHP you could be considered as web developer. However, most web developers are actually programmers and use code that works on webpages such as PHP, HTML, CSS, Ruby, Python, etc.

If you're going to start to develop websites, I would strongly suggest using PHP, HTML/CSS and Javascript as a basic foundation to start with. These languages are very easy to learn and don't require a lot of time. Try using GitHub to gain knowledge of how code works and is written. I started out by trial and error. I actually Google'd errors I had and find solutions to them which in return helped me to actually understand how code works.

Genius so your self taught? How long do you think it would take to learn? I work for myself and i have a few hours a day to learn coding. How long have you been doing it? Also have you been successful financially? I Apologize if my questions are invasive and by no means am i looking for exact details im just super curious about this. I know a few guys that get paid upwards to $125 an hour but they work for large tech companies. Is that kind of pay seriously acquirable by the average freelancer? Thank you for answering my question and im going to take your advice.

Yes, basically. But I don't consider myself to be a genius at coding. Lol.

How long do you think it would take to learn?
Probably not that long, to be honest. Do it for 6 months and see how well you do. As with anything keep at it and keep growing your knowledge.

How long have you been doing it?
Since I was about 16, i am 23 now so about 7 years.

Also have you been successful financially?
I could assume that I have been. I do earn income from programming, and it does help pay my rent/bills.

Is that kind of pay seriously acquirable by the average freelancer?
By the average freelancer? Well this depends on how well you code. If you suck at code or can't even code your own script then don't even think about getting a programming related job. People who hire programmers do extensive checks to make sure you actually know what you're doing. It's very competitive to get hired as a programmer especially if you didn't attend college so you would have to have an extensive portfolio of your work.

I've noticed this in the industry, back in the days there were back-end developers and front-end web developers. The back-end programmers used to build de functionalities and the front-end used to adapt them to a website.

Now, most back-end programmers also need to do front-end programming and also the other way around. They really started to mix and you need to know it all, the more the better, this includes mobile app development which is very good paid and companies are always looking for such workers.

Yep, programmers are weeding out the middle man that's why some websites have nice code, but the frontend is just awful. Ever witnessed that before? You probably have.. at one point or another. Now, programmers are either using free themes, or premium themes (from sites like wrapbootstrap or themeforest) to apply to the frontend. The front end may not be much but it looks somewhat professional.

There is computer programming, mobile applications programming and web applications (website) programming. Each are different. And yet each of these using different programming languages. So you have to decide what you want to do, and which way to do it. After you learn one thing, you can probably easier learn others and do developing for anything, but first learning takes a lot of time...

ah ok thats what i wondered. So do you think it would be worth it to learn? how many languages are around the internet today? Do they change? Will i have to learn new languages all the time do old ones become irrelevant? I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Exactly as ProCoder said. You can stick to one programming language like PHP for web development. But yet you have to know that they change. Some of them (like PHP) getting more simplified with new commands, but old ones still working too mostly...

This has been a very interesting discussion, since I was always a bit fuzzy on the difference between web developer, programmer and coder. They have all seemed rather interchangeable to me.

I can do some basic html, as in I understand the concept of how it works and if I want to add something really basic like linking to an email address or adding an image to my sidebar that opens up in a new window... I can do that with html.

If I need to know how to add something to my page then I go look it up online. But coding a website or going into the header stuff of my websites... no thanks... it is way too scary looking in there!

Yeah it looks a bit much hey? I do think that you have to be a certain type of person to have an aptitude for coding. I don't believe I am one of those people. I would never find coding enjoyable or satisfactory to do. And I do think that in some way you should be able to either actually enjoy the work you do or find some sort of satisfaction doing it and I would be lacking in this department in a big way.

That's the way I was at first. I thought to myself, what is this gibberish, and how exactly does it form a website, let alone work?! Then I got to understand the code more and more, and then eventually started to write it.

It's not that scary if you learn it step by step.

I have a lot of respect for programmers because back in the days when I tried to learn a basic programming language I just could not make heads or tails of it. And it was a very basic language not C or anything like that. I think it takes a lot of skill to be a good programmer. It was certainly not for me.

I recently started to learn how to code in PHP and it looks very difficult at first because you are exposed to all these words and syntax that you don't understand but once you break everything down and slowly go through everything part by part it is actually not too difficult. Once you start to understand the concepts and practise more and ask questions, it becomes less difficult. The interesting thing about coding is that you learn something new everyday and even people who have been coding for 10+ years are still in the process of learning.

Every aspect of programming is difficult, whether it's web development, software development, back-end, front-end - you name it. It's a never-ending learning process, everyday new frameworks and languages come out and you need to be up to date on everything in order to keep yourself relevant. It's a difficult field but very rewarding.

So if you want to learn web development, you can quickly get up to speed with modern tools such as Wordpress, or Wix or Weebly that allow you develop websites without having any skill in programming. If and when your website requires a feature that cannot be implemented with these tools, or if you want to extend the functionality of these tools, that would be the time to learn programming.

Programming requires a certain amount of logical thinking and close attention to details. But if you are really interested, with much time and effort poured into it, you can quickly if not easily acquire this skill.

Programming is not hard to learn if you can remember all its commands and can have a logic brain.
I tried to build a tool with codes and I realize that I need to have good knowledge before doing somethings in programming.

I have a little knowledge on both computer programming and website design. Programming is more on coding the steps of the program. It’s like writing a long list of instructions on what the computer should do with the data. It is not an easy job, boring and tedious. Website development is more of a design of the web pages and a matter of connecting those pages by the so called link. The design can be from a template, that’s the ready-made design that you can use and enhance or revise. I am talking of Dreamweaver webpage designer software.
