Well first of all these are free backlinks and second you can target the backlink on any keyword you want, meaning you can have anchors.

Its a great way for SEO, especially when it comes to ranking on a specific keyword.

Pardon me if I am wrong in my understanding that the signature link is the text that appears at the bottom of your post whether it is a comment or creation of a new thread. You can add the link of your site in that signature so it will appear every time you make a post on that forum. But I think there are forums that do not allow a link to be included in the signature. Is that being selfish?

Forum signature can help you build backlink for your website as well as generate traffic for your website. However, in order to benefit from forum signature, the forum where you are using your website link in the signature should be ranked higher than your website, getting higher traffic and has to be the authorative site. You won't get traffic through your forum signature unless you are very active in the forum.

It’s nice to read that signatures on forums can generate traffic to your website. My concern is the popularity of forums that some quarters say it is giving way to social media. There are indications that forums are waning and if the signature is one way of generating traffic then I guess some forum owners will be persistent in maintaining their forums despite the low patronage for now.
