How do you choose your niche?

I know there are so many different thoughts about choosing a niche.

Some people do loads of research into it and try to come up with a niche that can make lots of money.

And some people think about what they are really passionate about and go for it.

What are your thoughts about choosing a website niche and how have you gone about it?

So far I have chosen all my website niches based on passions…. And now my fourth website is going to be filling a need in our area, I think there is an opening in the market for this so I am going to run with it next year.

I have had blogs in general, pets, renewable energy and some other niches. General niche is the easiest because you can basically post whatever you feel without having to keep a particular way. Just post and blabber around all day long and no one will say anything.

On pets niche the story change, you will find out that there are a lot of pets enthusiasts which they will verify all your information. In this situation a proper research is requested.
The problem is not about the time you spend with the research but if you don't like what you are writting about then it will be a pain in the a...

I would advice all new bloggers to take a niche that they have some clue and they are comfortable with.

I think is something right in the middle, you have to be passionate enough so it will keep you engaged in the long run, but also you need to do a market research from all points of view, no reason to invest time and money into a project if you can't monetize it at the end of the day.

You need to know for certain that niche has the capacity to pay for all that wasted time you'll be spending creating the website and creating content.

Yes very true Cristian... but I also can't help but think that even if there is a lot of competition there is a way to carve out a little piece of the traffic for yourself if you are clever about it right?

I strongly believe that it should be mainly based on what one is truly passionate about, or very experienced in. The more you know the subject, the better you are going to do. People will feel that you are knowledgeable, and better still, that you care about this. Having said that, you also need to see what is available on the market. If you are good at something but there are tons of competitors, you are going to find it difficult to enter that niche and do well. So you need to be original and try to stand out in some way or other.

Yes and you need to be able to come up with fresh and interesting content all the time. This is not easy if you don't care much for the topic!

This is why I choose things that I am passionate about, I would never be able to write so much on a topic I find boring.

The main thing that determines how I go about my niche is the passion that I've got for that is the major thing that I consider on that path. Then, I check if such is going to be profitable in the long-run as well for me.

It is also based on passion for me because a niche that is outside your strongest interest may just give you a hard time in the future. When the niche is your passion then that means you are well versed in that subject and you are comfortable in writing about it as well. That is the problem with some bloggers that they choose a niche for the profitability that later on they run out of things to write.

In my opinion you should choose a niche where you feel comfortable the most. It could be something you feel passionate about or something that you like doing. The important thing is whatever you choose it should always make you happy.
