Where do you host your files? - External hosting or your server?

Dear Freelancers,
Do you store your files on your own server or on external hosting sites like dropbox? - Files you want your customers to download or perhaps entire backups of something.

I've heard great things about Amazon Cloud storage, especially for large files but I've never used it myself. Do any of you have any experience to share? - Have you ever used Amazon Cloud storage?

I haven't looked at it too much yet, but it seems like it's a bit expensive. I might be wrong, but anyhow, I'd appreciate any ideas, thoughts or answers!

I save absolutely everything to Dropbox, nothing gets saved to my laptop or my computer!

A few years ago the laptop and pc I had both broke on the same day and I lost like absolutely everything.It was a complete disaster and from a work perspective it hurt like hell. Of course losing all my photos and personal files didn't feel great either!

After that I started using Dropbox and online services, like Pastel Online for my accounts instead of a software on my machine.

It was an absolute pleasure when I accidentally fed my newish laptop an entire cup of coffee about 3 years ago.. I just went and bought a new laptop, signed into Dropbox and within about an hour I was working like nothing had changed.

But to answer your question about Amazon Cloud, I've heard of it but I have never tried it.

It sounds like you're either rather clumsy or very unfortunate Lynne. In either case, I'm sorry for you. However I can see why dropbox would be awesome to have in cases like these and I've been playing around with the ideas of doing backups myself just like you, but, I can't decide where or how.

With all the great replies in this topic, I'll probably go with the USB or an external HDD option though, as it feels more "safe" somehow. Compared to using dropbox that is.

When it comes to security and file hosting i don't think trusting anyone is a good idea. Dropbox and the others you mentioned are great for sharing files that are huge the share link feature is awesome. If you have information that you want to keep safe i don't think this is the best way to do it. What is the best choice? If money is no object or you have really important files than i recommend Synology box for this purpose. They do not use Windows or Mac OSX, they have their own OS which makes it harder to create viruses and back doors. They are always updating the firmware and keeping security #1 for their clients. You can add up to 4 drives in these boxes and they can be mirrored so if one goes down you have a back up.

I use multiple sources depending on their importance. For examples, my photos are automatically sync in Google photos but I also keep them in my 64GB phone SD and from time to time I move everything on my external HDD.

On my external HDD I also keep my wedding videos, photos as well as other important files. VERY important files I usually keep on multiple places, like dropbox, google drive and my external HDD.
I also have a couple of USB sticks around 64GB for moving files fast from one device to another.
