Hello ermias90.
What do you mean by equity? - What kind of equity are you talking about?

What I mean is equity in the start up or established business. You own an equity stake in the company, product and service for the work you provide.

Thank you for the follow-up response. - My answer would be yes. I would exchange service for equity, in case I truly believed in the project and if I found it to be interesting and worth the risk. - There's always some sort of risk involved, either money or time you spend on something, but as long as I can spend the necessary time, (afford to take the risk), then I'd have no problem doing this.

Great question! I have dabbled a little bit into this, and what I have found is that it is not very good to do. There are a lot of scammers on the internet that try to get free services, products by doing what you mention about equity. A lot of the times it never works out. Furthermore, a company or business could always pay a freelancer or contractor to get work they need from them done. Why would you offer you them stock benefits or another kind of equity? Would it not just be better to pay them off when they are finished with the service or work they are doing?

Well in most cases I would probably not be interested. I have found that I have a very work ethic and incredibly strict moral boundaries when it comes to work that a lot of people just don't share. I like to work alone and reap all the benefits of my hard work. The few times I have trusted other people and tried to work together on a project I have been sorely disappointed.

I would rather just offer my services to people on my own and get paid for it. Why would I want to split my efforts with anyone else?

I guess it will all depend on the company that's offering equity for my services. If it's Facebook, the company, for example, I'll probably consider being paid with stocks instead of money. With startups, if they're on to something i highly believe in, I might also consider. Being paid with stocks or equity is no different from investing one's money on the stock market. I'll use the same caution and conservative approach that I usually apply with other investing options when someone offers this option. I would have to say though, that I can only take the offer if I have other jobs that provide regular cash inflows to pay for my living expenses.

I would never exchange my services for equity for a start up business. If the business fails, I will have nothing left on my hand. Howevee, if the business is already a success, I might consider exchanging my services for equity.

This equity scheme is similar to the style of some film producers. Talent fees of actors are very expensive and so as not to constrict the cash flow, the producer would offer an equity to the lead actors like 10% share in the profits. Not all producers do that but there are some who are successful in their ventures. With the online business, I am willing to join that venture if ever I can be of help. I do not sell and my main line is providing contents to forums and blogs.
