What to look out for in Choosing A Writer?

A friend of mine is looking to hire a writer soon and very skeptical about the kind of writers out there. What is he expected to be on the look out for when making his choice? Does country of origin come into play here? Reviews from previous clients? Sample articles written before now? Please advise.

Good guide. Judging from your post and the way you share your ideas and experience, you sound like you are a client in UpWork or Fiverr? Those are the only 2 freelancing sites I know that offers reviews or something.
Cheers!

I was a client on Upwork but I moved over to Iwriter. It offers me a faster response time and much more control over the jobs I need to be done, and writers I want to handle them for me

I see. But have you been using UpWork lately for some things aside from writing stuff? Maybe you could help me in UpWork? I can write some articles depending on your needs. I don't mind the price for now since I am aiming for hours and positive review. Cheers.

ALWAYS ask for a sample article. A sample article is important because you want to at least see some of their previous work. You want to know their writing style and how good they are. I'd really recommend also considering the reviews and the ratings that these writers have. Many freelancing platforms have a very solid system that helps you make your choice much easier. Also, make sure that the hired writer will know the topic that he/she will write about.

A sample article will start everything because you can check the style and the broadness of tye writer's intelect.

The best indication of a writer's caliber is his writings. As per the adage, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The article written by the prospective writer is already the output which you can evaluate. The foremost is the substance of the sentences more than the grammar. But of course grammar and spelling are also important although minor mistakes can be corrected.

Definitely ask for a portfolio when checking out a new writer, it's important to see what they're capable of writing and how well they manage to put their thoughts into words. I would also look into the writer's attitude, spend some time talking to him/her and see if that's a person you would work with.

Every project producer has a niche that they work on. If it is general articles then asking for a sample would be good enough. But if it is on specialised topics then apart from asking them to write a sample on that topic you could also ask for their qualifications as although one can search the net and collate data nothing like a writer who is qualified to write on the subject of your choice.

Request for a sample from the potential writers and select your best.
Most people however feel cheated for getting nothing out of the samples they sent you and thus may not write it at all or do shabby work instead. So price the samples even if it's some cents to make the writers put in more effort. Lol.
My opinion though.
But I have a question, when potential writers are made to submit about 10 samples before a work is given to him when he is selected, is that not a punishment?
10 samples just to qualify as a writer?
What if after wasting time to write ten samples, you are still rejected?

Hi there thanks for your query. I think you need to extra care of few facts, which I am going to tell you from my experience.
First of all before hiring someone, you must to check is he/ she capable to write regarding your subject? If you see he has worth experience about your selected subject than ask him to showing a sample or make a simple according to your instructions. This is first and pre condition. Now time to check his grammatical correction. And how good vocabulary is he use. Some of writer use simple word but very clear understand for reading. That should be good as well.

And if you hire from marketplace, before hiring someone, check his seller profile and look his feedback specifically on that service.

Hope it will help you.

Look at for sample content relevant to your niche. And you can request to have a few paragraphs written about your topic so as to assess his word and sentence construction.

I think that's a very important decision. As there's a million kind of books, there are also a million kind of different writers. You don't only want someone with a nice writing, great english and creativity but also with a good capability to produce the kind of content you're looking for! I hope you can find the right writer for your site. Good luck!

Sample articles are a given to the first test to see if that writer is suitable for your blog or website. Ideally, if I'm looking for an extra writer or two for my blog, I'll most likely look for one whose already within the realm of my particular niche. Personally, I find it attractive when a writer has quality articles that have few words. I'm a firm believer that less is more. So seeing someone with well-written SEO articles that provide information but are short and simple is a bonus for me. I also enjoy writers who know how to produce lengthy articles of quality as that does take skill too.

So for me, choosing a writer depends on what type of niche I need assistance with. As well as what type of writing style they particularly have. And of course the type of quality content they produce altogether.

When I hired a writer, I did not go to a freelancers site and posted my requirements or choose from those advertising their services on freelancer sites. Instead, I contacted a writer that I have been watching on a certain forum. After I offered her work, we discussed about the kind of writing I wanted and the payment she wanted. I had watched this writer write good posts on the forum, her posts were interesting, useful and informative. her language skills were also above average,
The first requirement is language skills and second requirement is writing skill.s

Your way of hiring a writer is not common and we can learn from that especially if you are a freelancer yourself then you have surely been seeing other freelancers. That is a neat trick you have done in choosing a freelance writer that you have observed which means there is no need for testing or interviews. You can instantly hire the freelancer because as you said the style of writing is okay with you.

Freelancer sites are the good platform to hire a writer. However, you can also be scammed because you do not know much about this writer. What if this write also sells the same content to other people. Therefore, when I was hiring a writer, I chose the one that I had watched on the forum where I was active.
Generally speaking I do not hire a writer because I am a writer myself. However, when I want contents on the topic that I do not know much or I am not comfortable writing on this topic, I hire a writer.
