How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income

When it comes to working online, it isn't an easy thing to do unless you already have a product or you've been doing it for years.  A lot of people will try to make money on the side, which could be hundreds of different things, but it all results in more money flowing into their bank accounts at the end of the week.  Some people prefer to run a lawn care service while others will sell a content writing service like myself, but you need to have skills in order to do this.  I could run a lawn care service, but I don't really like cutting my own grass and I'm not 100% sure how I would cut 10, 20, or 30+ lawns in a single week or two lol.

Side jobs, or side hustles, are a way you can turn your spare time into profits.  You need to know what you're doing before people will begin to believe they can purchase from you, but that's a pretty normal thing.  If you invest your time into this, it can easily become a full-time income and let you quick your actual day job.  You'll obviously want to be making plenty of money with your side job before you quit your actual job, but that's common sense when it comes to profits.

In this discussion, I'll be going over how you can turn your side job into a profitable full-time income.  You can achieve this by doing the following:

Managing your time better
When it comes to turning outside job into a full-time income, we need to get much better at managing our time.  You may not think about it, but you waste a lot of time doing pointless tasks like watching TV or talking on the phone with a family member or friend.  If you want to be successful with your side hustle, you need to be dedicated to it and cut out unnecessary events that just waste time that you could have used to make money.  It's a tough pill to swallow, but your family and friends could actually be holding back your success because you can't tell them No when they ask to hang out.

Figure out what you have to do each day, and write them down in a prioritized list.  This will show you what needs the most attention each day while other things can be skipped or not finished every single day.  You can label all your tasks in 4 different levels, such as:

  • Level 1: Most important - Tasks that need immediate attention the moment they pop up
  • Level 2: Important - These are tasks that are still important, but not exactly urgent, and they usually relate to growing your side job.
  • Level 3: Less Important - These are the tasks that will interrupt your other tasks, so they will need to be worked on before they become a burden.
  • Level 4: Not Important or Urgent - These tasks are the ones like calling your mom to say hi or when you want to watch TV.  They aren't as important as you would think and need to be avoided during work hours.

Go through this list every day, for around a week, and write down how often you spend working on each level.  You'll be shocked at how often you're wasting time that could be better spent on your side job to make you more money than your actual job.

Understand the 80/20 rule
If you don't know what this is, you're in luck, because Uncle Tommy is here to help you understand How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income  The 80/20 rule is where 80% of your results will come from 20% of your actions.  This means that only 20% of your daily routine might be producing the majority of your profits, and you'll need to figure out what that 20% is so you can focus on it.  If you can figure out exactly what the 20% is, you can scale it up and not focus on the other 80% that isn't producing results.

The best way to actually scale any business is to figure out the 20 in the 80/20 rule and focus solely on it.  With time management already done, you will be able to figure this out fairly quickly and scale up quicker because you don't have any wasted actions during the day How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income

Use the 1st hour of your morning to plan
When you first wake up, after you brush your teeth and shower, of course, you should sit down and plan out your day for 1 hour.  Doing this will help you keep on schedule and you won't be all over the place when it comes to completing tasks that complement each other.  You will need to turn off your phones, TV, radio, etc. so you're not distracted and can get your daily planning done.

You need to obsess over what you're going to do for that day, so you can hit all of your daily goals and feel more successful at the end of the day even if you didn't make a single dollar.  You'll need to turn this into a habit and perform this planning every single day because it will help you figure out what exactly is working and what isn't.

Research your successful competitors
If you can figure out who your successful competitors are, you can usually replicate what they're doing in order to get your own success rolling.  Tony Robbins often says "Success Leaves Clues" which means successful companies can be read and replicated for someone else to become successful doing the same thing.  You can go through a companies website and figure out exactly what they're doing to capture emails, encourage engagement, how they get people to sign up, how often they send out newsletters, how fast their websites are, how much content they have on their blog and many other things that can be seen as soon as you land on their homepage How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income

You can scale any business doing this, not just your own side job, so learn this little research skill and you will never have a problem making some money online.  One of the easiest ways to find these successful companies is to go to Facebook and like everything within your industry, then wait for the ads to start showing up on your newsfeed.  Find the ones with the most views, or likes, and figure out what exactly they're doing to get that big of an impact with their ads.  You can also use 3rd party services like Similar Web to see their traffic sources, which will give you an idea of where they're getting their sales How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income

Email marketing is your friend
It really doesn't matter what type of business you're trying to scale, if you're not collecting emails and sending out newsletters, you're just wasting your own time and you'll rarely have recurring buyers.  You might be afraid to send out emails, which is pretty typical when people get into email marketing, but there are services out there like MailChimp that help you automate this so you don't have to worry about anything.

To capture the emails, you'll need to have a sort of lead magnet that will entice people to sign up for your newsletters.  Your magnet will need to add value to someone's visit, which will entice them to sign up for your newsletter.

If you engage with your readers, they will begin to engage with you, but if you're not sending out emails you're leaving them behind and they won't come back to visit.  People won't purchase from someone, or a company, they aren't familiar with or trust.  This is why you'll see that people won't usually make a purchase on their first visit, or through the first email you send out, and it will likely take a few emails to get them back in to make a purchase.

In conclusion
Turning your side business into a full-time income isn't unrealistic, thousands of people are doing it each and every day, so I know you can do it too!  I would have never gotten into SEO or content writing if I didn't try, and that's what you'll have to do as well in order to know if you can turn your interests into a full-time business.  You need to research the companies out there that are already successful at what you're trying to do because they know something you don't.  You'll also need to manage your time better as well as follow the 80/20 rule in order to be successful.  Email marketing is your friend, so be sure to focus on collecting emails and sending out newsletters to increase engagement.  If you do everything right, you'll turn your side job into a full blow business making you more money than your actual job How to turn your side job into a profitable full-time income

Time management is huge - I’m guilty of often saying I have no time but yet I still find myself scrolling Instagram or Facebook so clearly I do have time and I’m just not optimizing it as well as I really could be. It’s a good reminder.

I agree. I also tend to procastinate when it comes to working but I still find time to scroll on Facebook. Which I am trying to control but it is like luring me every moment. After reading this, I'll be trying to follow his tips and see if it can work for me.

I actually want to deactivate my accounts for a while for that very reason. It can be so easy to waste time on them and it ends up detracting from other more valuable things that I could be doing. I'm sure the marketing gurus at Facebook and Instagram deliberately design their sites to get you sucked in!

I agree. They're like a sucking machine that will really lure us out of the things that we should pay focus on first. I deactivated it once but I didn't even stayed that way for a day. I hope that I can learn how to manage my time well. If there is anything that could help us control our deisre to scroll through social medias, I will really use it. Like an app lock, that will lock the social media applications on our phone and will just open after a few hours. That would be a very good idea isn't it?

We share the same sentiment regarding time management. I actually do care about it but, sometimes I end up doing not important things such as browsing my social media accounts, watching on YouTube and etc. I think we can never beat easily temptations, especially if it becomes a habit already. Luckily, I'm not that very hooked on not doing what I should do yet and I can still manage to focus on my goal... at least.

You are like one person I know who is addicted to social media that he sometimes gets engrossed that he would ignore the inquiries and even the phone calls are not answered. But if you can use the social media to the advantage of your business then I guess there is no reason for you to stop your social media sojourn. However when your social media involvement is just for fun then I guess that is just a waste of precious time especially when you have a business to work on.

Your article is a good read and I agree that side hustles can augment a freelancer's income. And depending on your side hustle's volatility, it may provide you with a good income, again it really depends on the side hustle. When it comes to email marketing, I think it's more effective in western countries because in South East Asia people tend to shun from email marketing. Marketers are tapping messenger through Facebook nowadays.

I agree with all the points that you have made in this post. achieving success in freelancing can be very challenging but certainly not impossible. I think it will require a lot of patience and hard work initially when you are starting afresh in the field of freelancing. it's always prudent to go systematically step by step when you want to take up freelancing as a full-time carrier. If you try to hasten things or become impatient about anything then you are likely to commit very big mistakes which eventually may force you to quit freelancing. The best strategy to achieve success will be to remain persistent in your efforts and work patiently and systematically

If you want to turn your side job or hobby into full time income, you're going to have to spend most of your free time promoting. That means that any time spent away from your day job - is going to be cut in half if not more.

Truly time management is one of the keys to make your business or job successful. I, personally, find it really hard to maintain a good schedule that could cover up all my to-dos but there were things that I have to compromise because I didn't planned it ahead of time. Now, thanks for your tips and I learned about the 80-20 which is a good strategy to cope up my work.

Manage my time is something I really find hard to do. I find writing out your priorities and keeping up with a schedule made my time more manageable. Avoiding distractions also. I don’t work near television or putting my phone on aiplane mode helps me.

I like that idea about putting your phone on airplane mode. My phone is probably my number one distraction, and often if I start losing focus with a task I end up picking up my phone and scrolling mindlessly through stuff. I'll try putting it on airplane mode next time to give myself more focus and less distractions.

I like the 80/20 rule. If only more people would follow it, there would be fewer people whining about how they hate their jobs.

I know a few people who have a side business that is rather profitable but which would have made them more money if they'd just quit their day jobs and fixed their attention on it. One is a great at baking but she only does her baking only occasionally and only when people who know how good she is request her to do it for them.

I suppose fear of failure is what makes people unwilling to take this step.

Good point. I've struggled with self confidence and the ability to just take the leap, and I think it's something that plagues a lot of people out there. That inner voice saying "what if you fail?" or "what if you make a fool of yourself?" tends to be pretty prevalent at times. It can be tough to overcome!

I really agree in time management because it has a big effect to our online earnings, I am struggling on my precious time on how I could deal with my online jobs because I am doing also an offline job in day time. It is very hard for me to deal with them since I only have one body but when I started to manage my time and take priorities those sites that give me a decent income then everything comes to a change which is really good on my part. That is why I am planning for my time everyday so that it will not be wasted because every minute of the day is important that is why we must make use of it.

If you are employed full time and is trying to make your side job full time too, well, that would be very hard and will take a lot of factors. Time management is really important and of course, your availability to do your job must be observed. If you value your work well, whether you're full-time or part-time, you'll get good results as long as you work with passion.

That's true, I also think that it will be very hard to work and to dedicate himself on to two different jobs especially if he decides to make both full time. Yes, it is very complicated in terms of time and sometimes the person might mess up things between two jobs. Also, he might loss time quality with family which is supposedly should not be sacrificed just to earn much. Well, it also depends on his skills and time management. If he can really do both with good quality of results, that's great then.

Building a portfolio and increase your charge rate so that it can earn a profit just as much as a desk job. Put the time and effort and hard work will pay off. Invest in it, whether you need better equipment to produce better quality do it? And research more so that you can have more insight into what you can improve on.

When you work online or anywhere you work as an independent contractor, it is really important to be disciplined. The most important thing to manage is your time. This is the difference between success and failure. When you are working online it is very easy to not have enough time to not complete all your tasks or to be overwhelmed by them. I like how you have divided the tasks in order of their importance. I also agree that you should eat the frog first.

I agree with time management because if you have that skill, you will be successful with your current job that you are doing, having a stable job this day is never been so easy, you really need to work hard to work as a regular employee.

Points well illustrated, and your article is great. Having said that, time management is the mother of them all. You cannot achieve the rest, without managing your time efficiently. Even a good plan needs time to establish.
Here are the points to take home:
  1. time management
  2. planning your schedule at the start of the day
  3. applying the 80/20 rule.

Thank you for sharing those tips to us. I agree that time management is very important not only for the workers but even for the students. When I was still in school, I was lucky to have learned time management techniques that my time was always comfortable regarding school work. When I graduated from college and got a job, the time management was very useful that I had never been late in coming to office.
