Using an SSL, even though you send payments through PayPal, will boost your sales.

An SSL is a way to show your visitors that all the transactions and registrations done on their website is safe and secure.  Now, if you're sending your clients through PayPal you don't really need an SSL because you're not collecting any data from them unless you're having them register prior to purchasing.  Now, I'm just going to talk about the websites that don't have a registration and are just selling to random strangers.

Now, some of you are thinking "That's going to increase fraudulent transactions, Tommy!" but that's not true at all.  I've had dozens of websites live and selling something, some require registration while others did not, and the fraudulent transactions were the around the same every single time.  If someone wants to buy from you, then file a chargeback, they don't really care about their profile getting banned on your website.

In this discussion I'll go over why using an SSL, even if you don't require a login and are sending people through PayPal, is a necessity if you want to boost your sales.

People see the lock in the address bar and feel secure
When someone comes to your website they don't know immediately that you're sending them to PayPal to make a purchase.  If they don't see the lock in the address bar, they will think the site isn't secure and that means their money and information is at risk, even though it's not.

People want to feel secure, especially online, so get an SSL and put them at ease so they decide to buy from you and not your competitor Using an SSL, even though you send payments through PayPal, will boost your sales.

Potential customers will see you've gone the extra step for their protection
Even if the protection doesn't matter, the visitor will see you've gone the extra mile to protect them and their information.  People will like your website and see it more as an authority since you went through a few extra steps to essentially get certified in order to get the SSL.

Your SERPs rankings will actually increase
There was an algorithm update within Google that prioritizes websites that are secure, meaning a website with an SSL is more likely to rank higher than an equal website without one.  So, just by having an SSL you're taking your SEO game up a notch lol.

It's not difficult to get an SSL, you can usually just do it in a few clicks through your hosting provider.  If you run into any problems installing it, you can usually contact your hosting provider and they will either walk you through the process or just do it for you if they're feeling nice that day Using an SSL, even though you send payments through PayPal, will boost your sales.

In conclusion
An SSL does many things even if you don't really need it, which is why I suggest everyone get one if they sell something through their website or even if they don't.  An SSL has many benefits that aren't talked about, such as Ranking Boosts, Trust from visitors, increased sales, authority boost in the eyes of the visitors.

I have heard that Google is boosting the shops and the small stores on the web. They do it by analysing the queries coming into the search. So the person with shopping intent is getting those sites in search. So it seems like the SSL enabled websites have lot more weight in that case. And another thing is that sending payment to such places requires you to follow some practices to protect the customer. So I think using payment gateway SSL plus website SSL can be a good start.

When you go extra mile to put your website in a good shape, it's all going to show your clients how much you value their safety in dealing with your site and it's all going to make them have more loyalty to your business brand. Who doesn't prefer dealing where he or she feels secured? Personally, I would choose security ahead of any other variables offered.

I was pretty lucky when first purchasing my hosting plan and domain because I got the free SSL with it. I couldn't agree more with what you've written though. People really do feel secure if they see that little green lock next to the bar. I think that it's worth spending those few extra bucks to get it - it's truly extra protection that's very important to most buyers. Don't risk it.

You added an SSL and now your website is slower? It sounds like your hosting is lagging and all you have to do is get a better plan. Larger eCommerce type websites need better hosting than $5 a month plans, and that's because there are plenty of images and scripts that need to load, which kills bandwidth, and will deplete your hosting in no time.

Boosting your website's bandwidth will increase your page load times and overall website speed, which will increase your rankings within the search engines, and you'll get more happy clients that way Using an SSL, even though you send payments through PayPal, will boost your sales.

Remember, having a slow website is a killer when it comes to sales because no one wants to wait around for your pages to load when they can go to your competitor and make a purchase in 1/10th the time it would have taken on your website. So, speed up your website by getting a better hosting plan and keep your SSL showing to boost trust and increase your sales on two fronts Using an SSL, even though you send payments through PayPal, will boost your sales.

I am one of those people who only trust showing an SSL. Anyone who is serious with his or her online business should have an SSL.

If the SSL is the one that makes the site HTTPS then I guess you have a point about security. However we have to take note that some SSL sites don’t work well with old computers. An example is our desktop that couldn’t handle some HTTPS sites with the Chrome browser although it can be accessed by Firefox. There are issues inside that case but I cannot elaborate here because it’s another topic.
