8 reasons you should think about joining an accelerator program as a startup

Most people don't even think about an accelerator program when starting up, mainly because they don't know about them, and they are essentially a jumpstart program that puts you in the room with people who are already successful and will help you out along the way.  There are plenty of businesses out there that have been successful simply because they joined an accelerator program and knew what to do, and especially what NOT to do, when it came to their business and day to day operations.

You can't go about your day thinking you know everything about your business and how to run it, because you don't, but you can learn over time through an accelerator program!  Getting into a program like this isn't the easiest thing to do, mainly because you need to spike the interest of the people who are already in them, but once you're in you have unlimited access to successful minds and guidance.

So, let's get into these 10 reasons you should join an accelerator program as a startup!

Detailed Support System
No matter your question, you will likely have multiple people answering you in order to lead you in the right direction.  They want to see you succeed so they won't tell you false information and lead you down the wrong path.  They made mistakes throughout their journey, learned from those mistakes, and now they're telling you what you need to do in order to avoid those mistakes.

Many activities to be done
You might not know how much actually goes into running your business, but the people within this special group do, and they will tell you every chance they get if you need help.  You might not think of building relationships with other business owners within your niche, you might not think of setting up detailed social profiles and being active on them, you might only think of setting up a website and an adwords campaign.  This program will tell you everything you need to do, and usually, they'll have guides to look through in order to go in the right direction, so be sure to take in all the info you can.

Access to potential investors
A lot of these programs will have successful business owners within them who now invest in other businesses in order to make even more money.  These investors know you've made it within the group because your business has potential, so they don't have to worry too much about investing, but they might still need you to answer a decent amount of questions before writing a check.  Just being a part of this program allows you to talk with these investors one on one and not have to talk with a secretary or manager of their firm.

Quick access to vast pools of knowledge
The support system is great within these programs, but the true power comes from talking to the people directly, which will get you detailed answers telling you what to focus on.  They will give you their point of view related to their own business and you can use it however you want.

Access to future customers
The majority of people within these groups have already accumulated plenty of sales, but the real beauty of accelerator programs is that you can partner up and share traffic with other people in there and increase your sales overnight.

Development of specific skills
You may not know what skills you need to have for your industry, but I'm sure the group will let you know exactly what should be researched and tested before going any further.  Think about it, if you were trying to code up a website and didn't know what language to do it in, you could ask the group and they would give you a detailed response along with resources on where to learn that specific language easily to get your new website coded up.

Dedicated risk analysis and management
Your risk analysis and management comes in the form of the members themselves.  You can post an idea you had in mind and they will either tell you to go for it or avoid it at all costs.  The senior members of this group have been building businesses for a while and know when to go all in or when to fold, so be sure to listen to them after getting accepted.

Motivational support
When you feel down, you can always go to this accelerator group and post your problems.  They will likely pick you up, dust you off, and pat you on the butt while saying "Get back in there, you can do this!" and it's going to perk you up a lot.  They've been in your shoes, some more than others, so they know it's always going to be darker before the light appears, and that light is profits 8 reasons you should think about joining an accelerator program as a startup

In conclusion
Accelerator programs are great things to join, but they might not be right for everyone, so be sure you know what you're getting into.  Some accelerator programs require you to put up some sort of equity in your business before you even get in, which I think is a bit ridiculous because you don't really know how much it will really help you, so try to find the right group with great minds and doesn't require you to give up equity in order to join.

I actually think this is an amazing idea. I just started a business. I'm kind of winging it, I don't really know what I'm doing, I'm learning as I go. Its probably taking me a lot of time to make my business profitable then someone who has a mentor or some sort of help from somewhere.I will take your advise and look for a programme to join. I agree requiring equity to join is a bit ridiculous. Not many startups have that much money to start with.

The truth is that starting up any form of business is very difficult especially when there is a tough competition in the market with the products and services that you are offering. It's going to take a while before you settle down and stable to compete with the same pace against your business rivals.

Exactly. My sister had that issue when she started. Then, she realized it takes time and effort to have a stable business. It wasn't easy to develop a website, getting into social media, learn how to move between a lot of competitors, offering rewards and customer service. She got help from the whole family, but she also took some tips from experienced people, that way she could learn some valuable tricks.

You should know there is hope for your business before you try to join an accelerator program. Not all websites or businesses get accepted, mainly because the majority of the applicants think they'll get accepted with $0 in sales, so be sure you have profits to show before you even think about applying.

These programs aren't something anyone can join, they're like an elite squad of business people that want to only bring in other successful businesses to hopefully profit from or partner with in the long run. A lot of startups don't get accepted for that reason unless they're backed by investors, so be sure you're making money before you apply so you can increase the chances of getting accepted 8 reasons you should think about joining an accelerator program as a startup

Everybody prefers getting in bed with successful people in business, I believe that it's the reason why accelerator programs are more open to accepting websites that are already successfully in sales and not those that are still trying to scratch the business surface.

For a start up it is understandable for one to learn the ropes in actual operation. But as the owner you should have a master plan for your business regarding operation and promotion. It is not a good idea to just start up a business and play it by ear because your capital will be exhausted sooner or later. It is good if you have extra money to augment the vanishing capital but what if your capital is your only money?

I think lot of startups also close if they get funding earlier. I have seen many startup founders burning money on useless things. And for that you can see that startup is definitely going to suffer unless they learn to have financial projections. These days startup accelarators are having the financial bloating. And they make sure to not invest into the idea that does not pay back in returns.

When I think about how various startups fail I appreciate this idea a lot. There are numerous reasons which lead to the failure of such ideas and the accelelators can assist with such. I just advice that one does their own research keenly to get the best programs.

I agree with you on this as those that are working with the accelerator program will always be there to guide in the best possible way needed to push through the things needed to make everything work pretty fine.

The time that it is going to save you is something that is essential when it comes to business. Also, the rate of failure will be greatly reduced when we work with those that are already experienced in the business that we are looking at doing.

It is one of the best moves to make when starting out as a new business person in an industry. Joining an accelarator program is a great way to have access to a huge amount of investors that are willing to help out in that project that you have at hand and this is something that won't have happened if you didn't make yourself available to join such a project.

Investors are huge part of one's business success especially when you don't have the financial power to push further in the business. So, it's very important to have a better business plan and strategy that would have the potential of getting you investors that are willing to invest in your business and push it towards success and breakthrough.

I have several friends working for startups, and I don't even know that they know about accelerator programs - so this is highly useful. The more you know, the more you can do for your business, especially when it comes to getting it off the ground to be profitable and successful.

I agree. If you can do anything that will assist you to rake in the profits sooner it is always a great option. There needs to be a keen consideration of the people you join up with.

Thank you for sharing this information. I don't even know what is an accelerator program before. I have started my own business last May. I'm looking to further my knowledge and skills and for opportunities to learn from those who have experience. It would be nice to have a support system and an access to potential clients. I'll look into this.

Currently there are 2 startup accelerator programs in my country, one is called the Spark Project and although it's mission is to help and guide entrepreneurs in financing their projects few people are willing to share their business secrets and unique products to this organization.

I like that benefit of having access to potential investor. I know of some entrepreneurs who are in need of capital that they try to roam around the industry in search of investors. But if you belong to a group that has the right connection to potential investors then that is probably a good thing for those who are used to crowd funding. But to be honest, I am not in the fold of those who have the guts to ask for an investment. We have done that before and it is very frustrating to be rejected.

Definitely, anyone on their startup needs some guiding hand, even if, say they have knowledge from an MBA or something, nothing beats experience, and accelerator programs really help in that regard.

The most effective way to learn is through experience but when starting a business you do not have the experience on it. Exposing yourself to other owners and investors will taught you the in and out of the business. Having an experienced mentor is really an advantage so do not seclude your self and start engaging to other people in the industry.

When you are beginner it is really important to have someone to talk to regarding to your problems that you encounter. And, exposing yourself to knowledgeable individual will help you to move forward in business. Before joining an accelerator program always do your research because there are so many scammers in the internet.

These acceleration affiliates are great. If they were tajing zero profited businesses and assisting them to soar will be the noblest idea. Yet I think they do not. So they look for already striving businesses. It is a good idea though.

Insightful post. As a newbie in the writing industry, I faced a lot of challenges because I am self-taught. At some point, I even lost more than what I could have used to join a start-up program.

Apart from the above-listed points, accelerated programs help one to earn within a short duration. It took me so long before I made my first earning.
