I have read online that all search engines frown at duplicate content.but why would anyone want to duplicate a content. The best bet is to read a previous work and get inspiration from there and write your own in a unique maybe a different style, wordings or a totally different angle because even if they don't frown at this, the first site that has that content would be ranked higher than the duplicated site.

I think a duplicate content is a killer for the website in all search engines. They have a way of knowing duplicate contents especially if the duplicate content came from another website. It is a mortal sin and the website may even be removed from the index of the search engine. That means the website will not be included in searches anymore because of that mistake of duplicate content. And I think even a just a paragraph that is a duplicate will result in the same violation.
