Home page links generally carry a bit more authority since that's usually where a site's own link equity is concentrated, but it really depends on the goal. If you're trying to rank a specific product or blog post, a link pointing directly to that subpage (deep link) is usually more useful than a generic home page link, since it tells Google exactly which page is relevant for that topic. In practice a healthy link profile has a mix of both rather than 100% pointing at the home page - that mix itself looks more natural too.
