The best practice is to do your job manually , so for example commenting on websites organically and always making sense of the things you say , the worst practice are to run automatic software and create backlinks on low quality sites.

I think the best practice would minimalist design, responsive layout and easy to access navigation and content. In case of bad practice, I'd say using too many popups. You are not designing for the responsive website. You also need to have less clutter or else the users are going to be going outside the trafficked website. So small things such as this do make sense. You can get the website reviewed and surely that should work out for you. Find some of such services who can do that for you.

Best practice is building contents with highly searched keywords that have less competition. Content is the king and you need to optimize your contents with focus keywords. Your content should have keywords on the title, meta description as well as in the body. It is better if you can use a long tail search term as the title.
The worst practice is using bots to generate backlinks and traffic.

I don’t think there is a clear description of a high-traffic design of a website. Unless the navigation have broken links, the design is okay as far as traffic is concerned. And getting traffic is the reason for getting traffic which means you have to be promoting your website continuously to whatever website that allows marketing posts. Although the other means of getting traffic is through search engines, I still would go for the proper marketing chores to promote the website.
