I doubt anyone has done any extensive testing that could give you a definitive answer but I would in general say yes. They're positive reviews given by people because they chose to take the time to do so and I think that holds value.

Recommendations does help making buyers believe in you. However, it is more recommended that you focus on your quality of work instead of getting more recommendations. Yes, recommendation may help you increase your sales. When you get recommendations, they are added to your profile page and whenever a buyer sees your profile with good recommendations, he may get attracted to you.
