I always try to think of something short and sweet that is also rememberable at the same time. Having too many words in your domain is never a good thing since people are lazy and don't want to type much even if it benefits them because your website is the best in the world. Try to keep the domain down to two words and two to four syllables. There are some exceptions like SEOclerks since "SEO" is a well known thing among webmasters and is now seen as one word. So there's "SEO" and "Clerks" which fits perfectly into my model. Short and sweet, two words and two to four syllables
When I register a domain name I think of what can easily be branded. Branding a new domain name is difficult, but it's definitely worth it in the long run. It's definitely good to get your keyword in the domain name even though it's not as big of a benefit to SEO as it was a few years back. Getting your keyword in the domain is like an advertisement that lets people know what your website is about prior to typing the domain name to the search bar or clicking on a link they find online.
If you're going the route of making a short domain name that you want to brand but doesn't really fit a niche, like Twitter.com, then you're fighting an uphill battle and it could be worth it in the end if you don't really need to make money from the website in the first few years. If you have an investor, then you're going to be able to brand this pretty easily lol :D
If your domain is taken, look for something similar.
