Always make your documentation on every keyword with adwords keyword tool. Look for the most efficient keyword, (low competition and high search rate).

You want to look at how many searches per month a keyword gets at an exact and broad match. Exact will be what you get if they search for that term and that term only. If you use Google Keyword tool this number will be inaccurate and grossly inflated.

Next you want to look at CPC if you are going to try and earn an income from the site using pay per click such as adsense. This will tell you how much each time a person clicks that you will earn (or you will earn a portion of it).

Then you want to look at the competition level. How many websites are competing for this term? Who is ranked 1-10 and what kind of authority do they have? How many backlinks do they have and are they beatable or are they some website with tons of power like Wikipedia or MSN?

I appreciate your lengthy explanation on the selection of keywords but from the looks of the procedures you enumerated it will take a long time before I can arrive on a keyword. Can I not just think of a keyword that is directly related to my content? For example my content is about caring for dogs with an issue with ticks and fleas, the keywords that I can think of are tick-infestation or perhaps petparasites.

Look for the keywords that get high search hits but there is so little content on the web. In other words, you need to choose a keyword that has high hits but less competition. Instead of one or two words keywords, find a long tail search term. A long tail search term is the exact phrase that people use while searching online.
When you are choosing a keyword choose a keyword that gets more more than 500 hits and less than 5000 hits. If you choose keywords that get less than 500 hits then it is very likely that you are not getting any traffic, if you choose keywords that get more than 5000 hist, you must understand there is too much competition.

It looks like using keywords for SEO capability of the site is not simple. You have to do an evaluation to determine the most potent keyword for your purpose. From my understanding before, all I thought was a keyword can be anything and it wouldn’t matter what word you use. Now it seems that keywords have their own values in terms of quality so we should know how to select the most effective keyword.
