Do you have a chat box for your forum?

Are chat boxes good or bad for a forum? Do they help bring forum members back and make it an exciting place to hang out? Are there any downsides to having a chat box on a forum?

A chat box can kill a forum's activity. The posts that would have been made on forum are made in the chat box and then lost. Forum posts can be archived and provide a rich source of material that can be indexed by search engines. Not true for the conversations posted in a chat box.

A chat box or shout box is double-bladed, so to speak. It is one way of attracting walk-ins because a dynamic chat box is attractive to guests especially if the guest can post there. I remember joining a site because of the chat box where I was able to obtain some info about the site. But when the chat box is too dynamic, some members forget to post on the boards and just concentrate on the chat box. In that case, the chat box seems to be competing with the forum.
