Combating forum bias

As admins and moderators, it's always possible to have a favorite member(s) on forum. And, that bias could lead to favoritism such as allowing those members to get away with more than needed. How can we as forum owners and admins combat the natural tendency to pick a favorite forum member and do our jobs more effectively so our communities flourish and all forum members can be happy?

This is a hard one as there are some members that are just more likable. But I guess one must just remember that they need to treat every equally so you attract more and more visitors. No one wants to go to a site that has favorite members.

You can not let someone get by with something and punish someone else for it. If word got out that would be a good way to destroy your forum!

Nothing good comes from having favorites though. Yes you might connect better with a forum member than some others but if others see you favor one and not them, they might cause trouble.

Everyone has favorites and that is fine. Just do not show it on your site or you might be wishing you did not.

Favorites are a touchy subject. You should not have them but everyone does.

This is true and it is hard not to have one or two that you allow special privledges. But I see your point as it can really cause hard feelings.

You can have personal favorites whom you feel more comfortable talking to, but don't let them have special perks (such as breaking rules) or else you will alienate the majority of your community which can kill the forum.

I agree that all of us have our own biases and prejudices. But that should not interfere with our job as admin or moderator. Being officials of the forum, we should be neutral all the time particularly when there is an argument going on. And the best approach is always with a diplomatic touch to avoid offending a member. The problem is when the admin has a favorite who is at odds with the favorite of a mod.
