How do you balance work with family time?

How do you balance work with family time if you work at home or have a part time home business (and also work outside the home)? There are times when a mom or dad has to do things around the house even when they have pressing deadlines for clients. How do you handle the situation then, when you need undisturbed work time for awhile?

Interesting question Bev, I usually try to do the most important thing or complete the first client order first. It is difficult to work directly from home, and get the message across that you do actually need to "work". How about another close location nearby like a library, cabin in the woods or office space?

How does that sound Bev?

Balancing work with family time is a great thing to do. If I were to choose about prioritizing between the two. I would choose the family first then time for work.

Having a dedicated office space and dedicated business hours is a really good idea; some place away from the family entertainment area so that work can be concentrated on during business hours.

I have a full time job in the office aside from my freelancing. I admit that I have little time for my family. But I make it up when I avail of my vacation leaves in the office. Right now we are in South Korea for a week of vacation. And although I'm doing my online work for an hour when we retire in the hotel, everyone is happy since a vacation is a time to enjoy.

As I see from my parents, they are available in the morning, evening, weekends, public holidays and days when they have take a break from work. That is how they balance work with family and we are all used to it. As for me, I try to balance my time for family, friends, school, free time and being a part time writer. Since I give almost equal time to all of them, much of my time is taken by school and then family. The rest I always make sure to create or find more time.

I scheduled my time so as not to coincide with family affairs. I only work when it convience and the kids are busy on their own though I still keep a eye on them.

I work and care for the home at the same time. none suffers.
