Google loses libel lawsuit

An Australian court has determined that Google search engine is the publisher of libelous content against a political official.

Trkulja sued Google and the jury concluded that the search engine was the publisher of images of Trkjulja and related information which suggested he was involved in crime and that his rivals had hired a hitman to kill him.

 did they publish the images or was it just in searches?

Most likely the libelous content was a news story that Google provided links to from their search results. And, though Google didn't create the story, they allowed people to find it, rather than taking down the material.

Here's what Google says about their search results after the fact.

"Google's search results are a reflection of the content and information that is available on the web. The sites in Google's search results are controlled by those sites' webmasters, not by Google."

Google is passing the blame to the sites it's linking to.
