Sending newsletter to massive amount of users, how to prevent email server from being blocked?

I have a huge user base and I want to send a weekly newsletter to users who have opted in to receive newsletter emails. All of our emails are in compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act in the US. The newsletter would be mostly automated content with some news/updates.

I've noticed all of my competitors are sending daily or weekly emails and it makes me wonder how they are doing it without being flagged as spam by email black lists? How can I send a newsletter on a regular basis and ensure it doesn't get flagged or black listed? What should I consider before sending out a newsletter?

How are you sending your emails? Are you using an email autoresponder? If you aren't you really should be. I use aWeber which is a paid service, I love it. Otherwise there are some other companies that are free or free up to a point like Mailchimp.

Sorry my answer might be silly like when my car won't start and people ask me have I put in petrol... and I get quite annoyed lol.

PS aWeber has great training and videos you can watch which will help you set up everything. Plus they have a free one month trial period.

Hey robertman11,
Here's some information regarding this, even though the first paragraph is for those who've already been blacklisted.
Generally use this website MX TOOLBOX to find out which blacklist you are at (it can also help you to troubleshoot problems with your configuration such as good practice etc. While you're at it it will point you to blacklists you are on and will provide you with links to websites were you can remove it. Usually removing your server from blacklist happens automatically after 7 days or on simple fill out form should get it done. But there are couple of blacklists which want you to pay some money to do it. It's up to you if you want to.

As a side note. You could put a server on 2nd IP and have your main gateway different ip. This will prevent your server from getting blacklisted occasionally since only legitimate emails will come from your server and the other ip won't be listed as mail server so it won't be a problem even if it happens again. Usually when you get static ip you get more then one, it's just matter of configuring your router properly to supply that (Virtual IP and port forwarding for the rescue) :-)

Here's the source of this.

With that being said, I would also recommend to start off with weekly newsletters rather than daily. Start with a newsletter once a week and then scale things up in case you don't see a lot of people who unsubscribes. In case they are, then reduce the amount of emails you're sending them until you've gained subscribers again. Also make sure to send something of real value to each person and not just a bunch of newsletters for the sake of it.

Best Regards,

You could try to send your customers a personal email message where you inform them that they will be receiving a newsletter on a regular basis, and thus you request if they can white-list your address. In such a way your emails will not get filtered into Spam. To avoid the problem altogether I think it is best to consider a paid service or that you use a large email host like Google mail. Sending newsletters is a good marketing tactic, and there are several good options in the field of email marketing companies that will provide you with business email and newsletter services at a reasonable price.

All the subscribed emails and stranger emails go directly to the spam folder. When the subject of the subscribed email looks interesting that’s the only time I will read it. And when the content proves to be important then I will save it in another folder because the spam folder deletes the email after 2 weeks. But sometimes a subscribed email lands in my inbox. Maybe it has a way to do that?
